The "normal" way of working in portrait painting
If there is such a thing called a "normal way of working" then this is the process of
Initial drawing of the portrait (usually with charcoal, but it is also possible
with a pencil, brush, etc.) then color the drawing with various techniques
that suits the style of each artist and his working technique and style.
What is the reductive technique?
Well, with the reductive technique we apply paint to the canvas
and with the help of a piece of cloth, we remove paint from the canvas.
Important things to understand in the process:
- The reductive technique is done while the paint is still wet
- The cloth you work with should be one that doesn't leave any residue
fibers of cloth. A piece of a t-shirt is excellent.
- Pay attention to the pressure applied to the cloth. Strong pressure will take more
color, a weaker pressure will take less, and this is the play between light and shadow.
- Work from large to small surfaces and be gentle at your work.
Take your time and don't rush.
