How to prepare the canvas for work with oil paint

There are different types of canvases for working with oil. The main ones are: cotton and linen.

The canvases can arrive in a roll, stretched on a frame and they can also arrive stretched on a panel.

How to prepare the canvas for work with oil paint

Well, the canvas can arrive as it is without preparation, or with a base of gesso or oil with white lead-based paint.

- If it arrives without preparation, then you need to apply a layer of rabbit glue (you can find it in any craft store). Rabbit glue, seals the fabric. After the rabbit glue has dried, you need to apply three layers of gesso on it, and between layers you need to sand it with fine sandpaper. Don't sand too much, just smooth.

- If the canvas comes ready with gesso on it, it will be white in color, so it needs to be "dirty" so that we don't work on white color. White color as a base prevents us from seeing the colors correctly.
